Materia Abierta in Inhabiting the Museum

Through its residency program “Inhabiting the Museum”, the Museo Tamayo houses part of the 2026 summer program “para los tiempos de cuevas sónicas”, organized by Materia Abierta.

Materia Abierta is a space for mobilizing political will through collective principles. Based in Mexico City, his program causes meetings for the exchange of knowledge and ignorance. Its activities are essays to reimagine learning processes as shared responsibilities and experiences that stimulate critical intimacy.

Summer Program 2026: para los tiempos de cuevas sónicas

Under the title para los tiempos de cuevas sónicas, the Materia Abierta 2026 summer program is curated by Yina Jiménez Suriel and will be held in Mexico City from July 27 to August 22.

This edition will explore the figure of caves as temporary, geological and revolutionary phenomena through their sonic materiality. For four weeks, Materia Abierta invites you to delve into these resonant spaces of political insurgency and connection between material, mythological and spiritual worlds. We will work from improvisation as an expressive tool and as an aesthetic strategy of deep contact with the pulses of the earth. In these underground shelters, collective demonstrations have been conjured up, through sound, that have given rise to resistance movements and imaginaries of radical transformation.

With the help of speleologists, archaeologists, philosophers and artists, you will hear the caves of the Anahuac basin. These sites—planetary ears, passages between worlds and witnesses of social movements—link people to geological temporalities beyond the human and to the material dimensions of sound. They are living entities, sacred shelters capable of returning us to a state of intimate contact with the fundamental frequencies of life.

Since 2013, curator Yina Jiménez Suriel has been developing the history of mountains, a long-term investigation into the construction of imagination, movement politics and contemporary human and more-than-human emancipatory processes. Based on works with artists, scientists, thinkers and knowledge communities, this conference proposes a journey through some of the questions that have accompanied this research: How are subjectivities produced? , What conditions allow the emergence of new forms of perception? , How to expand our sensitive capacities to inhabit other ideas than possible? The conference explores imagination not as an abstract faculty, but as a material and symbolic infrastructure that organizes everyday life. At the same time, it proposes to think of perception as a field of political and poetic dispute, and to ask ourselves what forms of sensitivity are necessary so that imaginations can emerge beyond the binary and the stable.

Yina Jimenez Suriel. Artistic director of the 13th edition of Sequences Biennial (Iceland), curator of the 37th São Paulo Biennial and associate editor of Contemporary And (C&). It was Fellow Curator of The Current IV at Thyssen-Bornemisza Contemporary Art (2023—2025) and adjunct curator of the 14th Mercosul Biennial (2025). His recent curatorial projects include ARAVARA, a multi-venue exhibition developed together with KADIST throughout 2026 at the Museum for National Identity and LL Projects (Honduras), the National Gallery of Jamaica, Uniarte and Alice Yard; other mountains, those that run loose underwater, presented at Ocean Space, Venice (2025) and currently traveling at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Panama (2026); From Los Azules at Kunsthalle Lissabon (2024); and From underwater mountains fire makes islands, developed between 2022 and 2024 in collaboration with Pivô, the Cinemateca Dominicana, KADIST San Francisco, Delfina Foundation and the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design Manila, including the edition of its two publications. His texts have been published in Afterall, Contemporary And, Foam, Frieze, UNAM Art Magazine, Terquake and Belly button.
